Good morning! Not new to bass fishing but new to kayak fishing. Just bought a Hobie pro angler and i am interested in fishing these tourneys and meeting new people who enjoy fishing as much as I do. I have a tournament rules question. Does the measuring device have to say “Hawg Trough” or be brand specific? Can I use the hawg trough sold by Austin Kayak that has the “ACK” logo or the Hobie Hawg Trough? Thank you for your time and I look forward to meeting you all.

    1. Cory

Marc thanks for reaching out to us. We would love to have you come out. It just has to be a hawg trough model measuring board. Doesnt matter what sticker or logo is there.

Hope to see you out there man!

      Cory

Thank you for the reply! Not sure i will be fully ready for Lake Norman in February but will definitely be ready for the next one in March. I look forward to it. Thanks again!

My son and I are thinking about doing the upcoming tournament on Lake Hickory but he is only 11, is there a minimum age limit? Also about the Hawg Trough, I have one that’s expandable would that be legal? What time is the captains meeting and registration. I’ve printed off the waiver, is that the only document that I need? As you can tell from all the questions I am a newbie.

    1. Hi Trey,
Thank you for the questions. We’re glad to hear you are considering the event!

So far as the waivers are concerned, that will be all you need for you and your son. Be sure he has a well fitted, comfortable pfd – it’s a long day, and CKA enforces the pfd rule because angler safety is a priority.

As for the Hawg Trough, there is only one brand, and it is not expandable, so whatever ruler you have is probably incorrect. The judges will disqualify any fish submitted on a non-regulation ruler. We always bring a few extras to sell at the events ($20). Let us know and we will bring you a pair of regulation sized rulers.
Our judges review photos all day off site, and will contact you and let you know if there is a non-regulation size ruler i9n a photo, but you want to avoid that eventuality.

Sign up times are posted to the tourneyx registration. You will need an account there for photo uploads (they are free). You can pay registration there, too. We have shifted to on-line payment only because the series has gotten so big we found that we were carrying too much cash around, and it was a liability.

We appreciate the questions. Keep them coming. The best thing to do is review rules, and practice taking correct photos of fish you caught.
      See you soon!
      Hank and the CKA Staf

Good afternoon fellow yakers, couple of questions for you. I am super excited to be moving back to the great state of NC. I currently reside in Clarksville TN and fish with a local kayak fishing group. I am familiar with kayak bass fishing tournaments however I am not fimilar with local groups in NC. Looking to do some competitive tournaments and or just fishing with a group of guys. I was added to the old CKA FB group but haven’t seen any activity in quite some time. I think I saw something about you guys going back to the older version and that one I do not have access to, is it possible to get added to the new(older) group, if that makes sense? I will be moving back this time next month and looking to get after it chasing bucketmouths. Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you! TIGHT LINES!

    1. Hi Patrick,
Thanks for the message. We were all near Clarksville last month, fishing the KBF events on Kentucky Lake.

As for the FB page, you can find it through the link on the front page of this website. It will take you back to the page, and you can click ‘like’ to follow it. We don;t have to add you.

It sounds like you will be back in NC for our event at Badin Lake in early June. We hope to see you there – have a great trip!

  7. Russ Russell

Hello, my son and I are interested in fishing with your organization. We are both avid fisherman, I am 51 he is 13, and very good for his age. I also noticed the military connection, that really makes me want to be part, as an 11yr US Navy veteran, I enjoy interacting with other active duty and veterans. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    1. Hi Russ, Thanks for the note. You and your son are welcome to fish with us any time. Just to clarify, anglers are not “part ” of CKA as they would be in a club. There is no membership. It works like this: an angler can fish whichever tournaments he or she chooses. To do so, all you need is
      1. A Tourneyx account (basic one is free) for each angler. That’s where you register/pay for tournaments and upload your fish.
      2. the necessary equipment (Hawg trough is currently the approved measuring board), regulation pfd, etc
      3. knowledge of the rules. We follow KBF rules standards. btw, you do not have to be a KBF member to fish with us.
Let us know if you have more questions, and thanks again for considering us.
sincerely, Hank and the CKA staff.

    2. Hi Russ, thank you for the note. and sorry for the delay. Wayne Butler, one of the CKA tournament directors, is also a U.S. Navy veteran. You and your son are welcome to fish with us, as we run an Open series – there is no membership required. There are however rules, registration and photo submission requirements, so it is best to review them and practice. Here is the tournament section of the site, and ask us if you have any questions – we will do our best to answer them: http://www.carolinakayakanglers.com/?page_id=25

  8. Daniel

Hello. I am considering membership and tournaments. What ruler is allowed? Want to make sure my catch and measurements are legal. Thank you for your time.

    1. Daniel,
Thank you for the message. Anglers may use any KBF approved rulers. The Hawg trough is the standard, and the Yak Gear Fish Stik are the two approved ones as of now.
There is no membership – you register and pay on Tourneyx, show up and fish. We use Tourneyx for judging photos, too. Their basic account is free.
Let us know if you have more questions.
      best, CKA

  9. Cody A Rathmell

Hi, I wanted to do your next tournament and signed up for tourneyx but couldn’t find the tournament. Maybe i’m just missing it

    1. Hi Cody,
The event is listed on Tourneyx now, and the full tournament post will go up tomorrow (Friday 3/9) at noon. Thanks for asking!

  10. Cody

How do I find your tournaments on tourneyx? I tried to find the next scheduled one and could not

  11. Jasen

Hello. Are there limitations to what vessel we use? I am active duty military and an avid kayak fisher but I recently had an injury to my back, which I needed surgery. I have recently went to a Stand up Paddleboard. Is it allowed?

    1. Jasen,
Thanks for the question and for your service. The KBF Rules standard contains a list of approved watercraft. You can find that page on their website. If you have any other questions, just ask!

  12. Jay Lovejoy

How do I become a member of CKA? Where do I pay the dues?

    1. Jay, You can pay dues after the first event you fish. But if you don;t plan to compete for ROY/AOY, you can simply pay entry fees and fish, and win prizes anyway. Members do receive percs and discounts, etc, and the prize packages for AOY/ROY are big.

  13. Jereme okshefski

Where can I find the rule witch states That an angle must be at get outdoors at precisely 4pm on tournament day the only mention is that the angler be present. Any help with this would be appreciated.

    1. Jereme, Sorry for the delayed reply – we were on the road. Check in time was listed on the event post.

  14. Zachary Worsham

Where do I find a rule/regulations for entry and where/who so I contact to sign up?

    1. Zachary, Everything you need should be on the website. See the “Tournaments” and “rules” section, for example. Also, be sure to get to know how to use Tourneyx for photographing your catches. And as always, ask questions any time.

  15. Liam

What are the parameters on the flag? Does it require a light? Do I have to buy one or can I make my own with a 360° light at the end with a piece of cloth for the flag?

    1. Liam,
A 360 degree light is only required when night fishing or launching prior to sunrise, but it is a basic safety feature on all vessels and we strongly recommend it. YakAttack makes a durable, long lasting model that attaches easily to gear track fittings that are standard on most fishing kayaks, and most anglers use that model. You could make your own, too. As for the flag it’s your call, but the light is the more important safety item.

  16. Joseph

Can you enter a tournament with a kayak that is propelled by a trolling motor?

    1. Joseph,
Yes. Some Trails do not allow it, but we do. However, the trolling motor must be in compliance with state laws (registered, etc) and KBF rules regarding use of motors.

  17. David

You guys ever do river fishing tourneys? I’m over here on the Broad in NC and it’s an outstanding black bass fishery! If you check out my broadriverkeeper page on instagram you will see some nice bass recently caught during our 2nd annual Broad River Fish Tourney. We are looking for a group to partner with that has more experience so we can grow this event. Love your work!

    1. David, thanks for the post. yes, CKA does host an occassional river event – we fished the Cape Fear in 2020, for example.Email us some info at NCkayakanglers@gmail.com. If we can;t help, some will want to fish it!

  18. Is there anyone in NC that would be interested in starting up a Heroes on the Water Chapter. We lost the only chapter last year and we feel like that there’s such a large veteran and first responder community there that there should be a chapter there.
