What was no surprise was the fact that some giant fish were caught. Consider the following:

Jeremy Hicks won the final frame with a 62″ limit of three fish

Mark Wilkins posted a 21.25″ Smallmouth Bass in the January event

Will Lambert posted 61.75″ in the final frame, too.

Stephen Bell Sr. landed a 23.25″ monster, the biggest bass caught across the three-event series.

And while the series champion only landed the third longest limit of the series, there is nonetheless a new name in the CKA Hall of Champions. Not only did Juan Medina claim his first win in a CKA event (he won the inaugural December tournament), Juan is also the first-ever CKA Winter Series champion.

For context, the Winter Series was developed as something of an experiment. Neither CKA anglers or directors imagined that kayak fishing tournaments held during the coldest months would average more than twenty-five anglers per event, but they did!

Medina proved to be a constant force throughout the series. In addition to winning the first frame, he finished fourth in the second tournament (won by reigning AOY Bryan Tsiolkas) and wrapped up the winter title by placing third in the final event (won by Jeremy Hicks). Medina averaged just over 54” per event, with his best limit being the 60.25” bag that won him first place in December.

The key for Medina was finding baitfish. In his words: “The way I approached winter bass fishing was by just covering a lot of water and deep holes. A big indicator for me the whole winter was the amount of bait I saw during my scans, if there’s bait then I’m throwing every swimbait I got…”

Join us in congratulating Juan Medina. He will be the CKA Winter King until December of 2024, when the CKA Winter Series resumes.

Now, let’s all get ready for the spring bite.
