That’s because we have only fished three tournaments so far.

With five events left to go, any angler can get red hot and tear up the standings. Don’t think it can happen? Ricky Rowland did it as recently as 2021, when he placed in events 3-6 of that season to win Angler of the Year.

If you are a summer angler, the 2024 CKA tournament schedule favors you. There are four CKA tournaments over the next two months, and on some of our favorite lakes.

Here is a look at the top 10 in current standings.

What’s notable in that group? The majority are seasoned anglers with years of experience. Bryan Tsiolkas is the back-to-back club champ, a tremendous angler. Will Lambert is a former champion (2019), and he currently holds the lead in two clubs (CCKF is the other one). Will is the most dominant angler in North Carolina for the past year and one half – he has the NCKAR title to prove it.

Here is what else I see.

I see Joey Sullivan, who lost a close AOY race to Lambert in 2019, thinking about revenge. I see Drew Blair finally fishing an entire season so we can see what he is made of.

I see Dontrell Sullivan, who has been busy making a name for himself on the big stage without forgetting what a hometown title might look like on his resume’. I see two CKA directors (Brian Falbe and Justin Faircloth) looking to finish strong, and Justin already has two wins.

I see last year’s runner-up Rookie of the Year Leland Stuff fishing hard and I see Ryan Freeman gearing up for to make a run, like he did in 2021 when he had a chance going into the final event. And I see a wild card named Robert Miller. What’s he gunning for?

And that’s only the current top 10. With five events to go, that entire top 10 could change before it is over.

Your AOY score is your top five “regular season” events plus your Gate City Classic score.

So, one more time:

The next two CKA tournaments will decide a lot. If you are confident about Randleman and Jordan, get ready to fish. The summer bite is heating up and the Angler of the Year Race is wide open.
