The Battle on the Border
July 13th, 2019
We enter uncharted waters here for CKA anglers. CKA has never fished Kerr Lake, and it will be the farthest north and east our trail has ever reached. It is also the largest lake we have ever fished. Kerr Lake covers more than 77 surface miles of water; for contrast, Lake Norman covers fewer than 50 surface miles. It is also a river system (the Roanoke) CKA has never touched. In sum, Kerr is one of the largest impoundments on the Southeast, and will challenge how anglers break down big water. Want to test your skills against a massive lake? This is it.
And just to make things even more difficult, there will be a 5 fish limit at this event with a 12” minimum length, instead of the usual 3 fish/8”minimum limit.
Additionally, we will be competing with and against the Virginia Kayak Bass Challenge, the Virginia club run by Casey Reed, a nationally accomplished kayak angler and a long -time friend of CKA in the kayak fishing world. CKA and VKBC will run separate, simultaneous events. You can fish both, or just one. As an added bonus, the angler who submits the longest limit to either trail will take home a custom trophy to commemorate this inaugural tournament! This event is a great opportunity to get to know our friends to the north, fish new water, and compete for state pride.

Kerr Lake is a massive reservoir located on the Roanoke River on the North Carolina/Virginia border. It is northeast of Falls Lake, and not far from I-85. The lake was built shortly after WWII and it is one of the region’s premier Largemouth Bass, Catfish and Striped Bass fisheries. The lake has dozens of public boat ramps and marinas, as well as affordable camping. Be careful however: if you camp at the lake, be sure your campsite allows 24 hour access, so you can get out in the morning to fish.
Boundaries, Launches and Rules
The tournament is a multi-launch event and all public launches are available to anglers.
The event’s western boundaries are the Rt 360 Bridge on the Dan River near South Boston, VA, and the Hagood Highway Bridge on the Roanoke River.
For a list of park managed launches and NC Wildlife launches, see this link: https://www.ncparks.gov/kerr-lake-state-recreation-area/activities
Please follow parking regulations at the lake’s public launches. Be respectful and practice good ramp etiquette.
If you have not yet done so, please create a Tourney X angler account for event registration and CPR submissions!

CKA identifiers will be available online the week prior to the event, in your TourneyX dashboard. The event ID code will be released Friday evening.
Tournament Start/End Times
Launch: 5:30 am
Lines In: 6:00 a.m.
Lines out: 2:00 p.m. (photo cut-off: 2:30 pm)
You will not be able to post fish to TourneyX after 2:30 pm. This is so that judging can be completed prior to the end of check in. If you have trouble posting, be sure to leave the water early to find a signal so as to avoid delaying the judging of photos. We will not make exceptions for anglers who arrive near the end of check in asking for assistance with uploads.
The Henderson Point launch will function as tournament headquarters. All anglers must be checked in by 3:00 pm. The check in area will be under the large pavilion, as it was for Captains Meetings. CKA has reserved that area for both CKA and VKBC use.
Anglers must be present at the post-tournament check-in in order to collect prizes. If you leave the event early and will not attend the check-in, we ask that you send us a message via Facebook so we know you are safe.
Remember: All CKA Tournaments are 2020 KBF National Championship Qualifying Events, but you must be a KBF member prior to the CKA event.
Dozens of sponsors have provided event support for this tournament. Support both CKA and VKBC sponsors, and spread the word about them and the tournament!
