Shearon Harris Fish Habitat Restoration

We invite CKA anglers to participate in this great project to improve fishing at Shearon Harris Reservoir. As some of you know from previous posts, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is recruiting volunteers to participate in this effort, which is part of the Sportfish Restoration program.

By participating in this project, anglers will work with other volunteers (including other fishing clubs) to improve fish habitat at one of the nation’s most famous Largemouth bass fisheries. This is a great opportunity for CKA members to show that kayak anglers support the excellent wildlife officers and biologists who keep our waters safe and sustain our world class fisheries. Please try to participate, and spread the word to family and friends who might attend!

The scheduled work dates are June 18-22 and July 9-13. You can attend for one day or multiple days, and choose from various tasks to complete. They include:

  • Assembling Fish Attractors
  • Planting Vegetation
  • Marking GPS points for Fish Attractors
  • Building fences to protect emergent plants

To sign up, volunteers must register at least a week in advance of each event with Mark Fowlkes, the Commission’s Aquatic Habitat Coordinator. Mark Fowlkes can be reached by email at or by phone at 336-466-0541.

CKA Welcomes Boonedox as an Official Sponsor

One of CKA’s core principals is to support independent and local businesses. In 2015, Thomasville, North Carolina based Boonedox donated a T-Bone prize package to our Tournament of Champions event on the Yadkin River. In the years since, CKA and Boonedox crossed paths and continued to work together on occasion. 2019 marks the beginning of a new era: Boonedox has become an official sponsor of CKA and has generously donated giveaway prizes to each event and to the AOY prize package. And there is more….

CKA’s 3rd event of the year will run parallel with Boonedox Yadkin Slam, the annual multi-species charity kayak fishing tournament. Scheduled for May 4th at High Rock Lake, CKA will award a spot in the Tournament of Champions to the Yadkin Slam angler who lands the largest bass of the Slam’s bass category. With food, prizes and a great charity component, this is going to be a great event. And finally – at that event, Boonedox will announce the prize it will award to the 2019 CKA Angler of the Year.

CKA works with its sponsors to grow the sport of kayak fishing and to support local businesses and anglers. We are proud to work with Boonedox and we ask all our anglers to support this partnership!
