CKA Tournament 1 Shearon Harris Reservoir, NC

CKA Tournament 1 Presented by Basstrail.com

Shearon Harris Reservoir, NC

February 20, 2021

Overview

Welcome Anglers to 2021 season. If you are new to the Trail, welcome aboard and good luck in the Rookie of the Year race. If you are a CKA regular then you know the battle for Angler of the Year will be long and difficult against some of the best competition in the entire country.

We began last season at Shearon Harris, and Larry Moua landed a 24.25” LM Bass on his way to victory that day. That’s why we fish the lake – two of the 24” fish landed in CKA tournaments came from its waters. Who will catch the third 24” from Harris?

Shearon Harris is a small lake that fishes big. Many of you know it well and fish it hard, and year round. But the lake changes dramatically from day to day and during the late winter and early spring it can deliver the limit of a lifetime.

Which lake will show up? Will the bite be deep or shallow? Let’s find out as we begin our season on the best big bass fishery in the region!

A few reminders:

  • CKA has streamlined sign up and payment system for the 2021 season. All tournament fees are now through TourneyX.
  • CKA membership fees are now paid directly to:
  • CKA has a new payout structure. See website for details.
  • Make sure you have a valid NC Fishing License

CKA 1 Shearon Harris

Tournament Recap: Shearon Harris Event 1

We never thought we would have to write these words: yesterday, we ran an event following CDC and North Carolina Health Department Pandemic Prevention Regulations. We’ve fished and held many historic events, but that’s a twist.

First, we want to thank TourneyX for its check in/out system. Dwayne and TourneyX built in that feature, and without it we would not have been able to run the tournament. Second, we want to thank Duke Energy, Harris Lake County Park, and NCWRC for their assistance with the event permits and changes/cancellations. Communication between our Trail and those entities was excellent. Finally, we want to thank each of you who competed, communicated and traveled safely to and from the event. It was a relief to have it all go smoothly, and the credit goes to each of you.

In sum, this was CKA’s second highest attendance of all time. 90 anglers caught, photographed and released 190 fish on Shearon Harris, new anglers who submitted fish did a great job of doing it correctly, and communication between judge and anglers went smoothly.

There was a written dispute that necessitated a review of the standings. The review was initiated by a non-competitor who noticed an error. The matter was easily resolved. The final, revised standings are posted below and on TourneyX. This is why we returned to the Paypal system with a 24 hour window: it prevented a complicated return of cash funds. And yes, a non-competitor filed it: people are watching these events at all times, and that is all the more reason to take our time with results.

The final standings are now back open to see. Here are the money places:

CKA Event #1 2020 Shearon Harris

Shearon Harris Lake, NC

March 21, 2020

(updated 3.20.20)

Overview

6 years have passed since CKA kicked off a tournament season at legendary Shearon Harris Reservoir. 2014 was the first full season of CKA events, and we have fished the lake once every season since then – except for last season. Now we return.

Shearon Harris is a small lake that fishes big. Many of you know it well and fish it hard, and year round. But it is an unforgiving lake and one that changes dramatically from day to day. But during the spring it can deliver the limit of a lifetime.

Which lake will show up this season – the one that only produced 5 limits in 2018, or the lake that produced more than ten 3-fish limits over 60” in 2016? Let’s find out as we begin our season on the best big bass fishery in the region!

Of course, we will fish the lake during a difficult time. CKA will follow CDC recommendations to make gatherings /sporting events “virtual” until the current crisis passes. As such, the standard meet-up check in is modified as follows, as well as other elements of the event:

  1. All of the announced times and ramps remain the same. Anglers will launch, fish and upload catches as usual.
  2. The post event check in at Harris County Park is cancelled because the park has retracted all permits. We will still hold the tournament but without post-event check in.
  3. Anglers must use the “check in/out” function on your TourneyX dashboard.
  4. We will hold the awards ceremony, with trophy presentations, at the next event when check-in will be less of a concern. Door prizes will also be withheld until the next event.
  5. We will make an announcement about member fee collection later on. Our primary concern now is to manage logistics and get everyone out fishing safely.

In other words, the situation requires that the event will be run like an on-line event. Given our experience running those we don’t see any problems. We will miss the camaraderie of the check in scene but we all need to get out and fish. The pre-spawn bite is on, Harris is putting up giant bags, so let’s adapt and have fun.

A few reminders:

  • CKA has streamlined sign up and payment system for the 2020 season. All tournament fees are now through TourneyX.
  • CKA has expanded to a 5 fish limit per event (8” minimum length).
  • CKA will again collect member fees for the 2020 season ($20). We will post an update about virtual payment soon, and anglers will retain points when they pay. No points will be deleted so as to provide time to anglers to pay.
  • CKA has a new payout structure. See website for details.

If you are new to the Trail, welcome aboard and good luck in the Rookie of the Year race. If you are a CKA regular then you know the battle for Angler of the Year will be long and fun as you fish against some of the best competition in the entire country.

Shearon Harris Fish Habitat Restoration

We invite CKA anglers to participate in this great project to improve fishing at Shearon Harris Reservoir. As some of you know from previous posts, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is recruiting volunteers to participate in this effort, which is part of the Sportfish Restoration program.

By participating in this project, anglers will work with other volunteers (including other fishing clubs) to improve fish habitat at one of the nation’s most famous Largemouth bass fisheries. This is a great opportunity for CKA members to show that kayak anglers support the excellent wildlife officers and biologists who keep our waters safe and sustain our world class fisheries. Please try to participate, and spread the word to family and friends who might attend!

The scheduled work dates are June 18-22 and July 9-13. You can attend for one day or multiple days, and choose from various tasks to complete. They include:

  • Assembling Fish Attractors
  • Planting Vegetation
  • Marking GPS points for Fish Attractors
  • Building fences to protect emergent plants

To sign up, volunteers must register at least a week in advance of each event with Mark Fowlkes, the Commission’s Aquatic Habitat Coordinator. Mark Fowlkes can be reached by email at mark.fowlkes@ncwildlife.org or by phone at 336-466-0541.

Shearon Harris CKA/KBF Trail Event

CKA Tournament 5

KBF Trail Event

Shearon Harris Lake, NC

June 9th, 2017

Overview

Welcome anglers to event #5 of the 2018 CKA tournament season. The tournament will be held on June 9th at Shearon Harris Lake. This is our yearly visit to world renowned Shearon Harris and it is our first time hosting a KBF Trail on the lake. The tournament will be a multi-launch event using the two available public ramps at the lake.

The event will be held in conjunction with a KBF Trail Event.  Anglers may fish either the CKA and KBF event separately, or fish both events simultaneously. The CKA event is a 3 fish limit event and the KBF Trail event is a 5-fish limit event, but an angler’s 3 CKA fish can be cross-posted to the KBF event on Tourney X. Additionally, non-KBF members can compete in the KBF event but we encourage anglers to sign up as KBF members.
