The 2018 CKA Tournament of Champions

2018 Tournament of Champions

Hello anglers!! We are happy to announce the location of the 2018 CKA Tournament of Champions. This 2 Day, No Entry Fee event will be held on beautiful Falls Lake in Wake County, NC. We will have our trophy presentations for AOY and ROY on Saturday at the post event check in, and the TOC trophy will be unveiled Sunday.

This will be an incredible time of year to be on this lake. The fall bite will be on and we picked Falls knowing that we can possibly see a record breaking 3 fish limit from this lake at this time of year. As some Lake of you may recall, Falls Lake was rated in 2016 as the 8th best bass fishery in the Southeast by B.A.S.S. We fished it in June of 2016 as a CKA event, and fished it again in early spring of 2017 as a combined CKA/KBF Trail event, but this is our first autumn visit to this fishery and only our 3rd visit ever to the lake.

The lake has plenty of room for our exclusive field: Falls Lake is a 12,410 acre reservoir located in Raleigh/Durham North Carolina.  Falls Lake extends 28 miles up the Neuse River to its source at the confluence of the Eno and Flat rivers. The defined river channels and creek beds will probably allow anglers to discover bass chasing shad, and the grass beds, ledges and structure will hold fish that are still in summer patterns.

Remember: 1st Place for this event is guaranteed $1,000!

Accommodations

Camping accommodations have been secured Saturday evening for the Top 10 fishing Sunday. These sites are located at Holly Point Campground. Anglers who make the Sunday cut are not required to stay at the campground but the option is there and will be a good time hanging out with other anglers and the TD’s. Also, we encourage anyone that is either not qualified for the TOC or does not qualify for Day 2 to secure a site and come hang out with us.

Format

  • The full field of invitees will fish Day 1. Following Day 1, the Top 10 Anglers will advance to fish Day 2. First invitees will be announced immediately after the Gate City Classic. Spots will roll down.
  • Big Bass will be Saturday only and will be optionally paid by anglers. Big bass will be $20 (if all anglers buy in, this will be a $500 plus pot). Day 2 anglers may create their own side pot if wanted.
  • We will not be using TourneyX for this event. TD’s will review photos after Day one onsite and announce the Day 2 competitors as soon as we wrap up Day 1 activities.
  • This will be a multi launch event for both days of competition. Eligible ramps and other info are at the bottom of the post.

Saturday October 13. Lines in at 7:00am. Lines out at 2:00pm. Check in at Harris Teeter satellite lot by 3:00pm. Check in after 3:00pm results in disqualification of days catch.

Sunday October 14. Lines in at 7:00am. Lines out at 1:00pm. Check in at Harris Teeter satellite lot by 2:00pm or disqualified (Harris Teeter: 1432 Brogden Woods Dr, Wake Forest, NC 27587).

Ramps and Rules

Please be sure to obtain a valid N.C. license, and follow parking regulations at the launches, as this popular lake is closely monitored by NC Wildlife officers. To learn lake rules and find other information, visit the Falls Lake State Recreation Area site at: http://www.ncparks.gov/falls-lake-state-recreation-area

Beaverdam Lake Area is OFF LIMITS. Although it is within the Falls Lake State Recreation area it is separated from Falls Lake by a dam and is not accessible by paddling from other areas of Falls Lake; this technically has it closed off as its own body of water. Any angler who submits fishes caught at Beaver Dam will be disqualified.

The listed access areas (below) will be the only eligible locations to launch for the events on Falls Lake. Many of the Falls Lake launches are very large with ample parking, boat lanes and docks to tie off vessels after they are launched. Keep in mind that some launches may also be busy with boat tournaments, so respect fellow boaters and be careful at the marinas.

Of the 7 available launches, four are 24 hour ramps and two other ramps open at 8 a.m.  (Rolling View Marina website, which has a launch fee, currently lists opening at 9 am). Please keep in mind that CKA cannot control access to the ramps, and if a gate is closed or it opens late, there is nothing we can do to change that fact.

CKA Event 8: The Gate City Classic and KBF Trail

The Gate City Classic

Multi-Lake Event

October 6th, 2018

Hi everyone, and get ready for the Gate City Classic! The Classic is when we conclude and celebrate our season with fishing and food. This year it will also be when we determine – for the first time – the CKA Rookie of the Year! A number of prizes, qualifications and details are also determined on this final day of the regular season. They include:

  • AOY winner. The CKA Angler of the Year wins a custom prize package
  • KBF National Championship slots for the top 5.
  • The final standings to determine anglers who will proceed to the Tournament of Champions on October 13th.
  • Location selection for the Tournament of Champions. The lake is announced after the Classic and Final standings are announced.

Additionally, this year’s event is notable because we will also host a KBF Trail event. Remember that the 2019 KBF National Championship will be a multi-lake event, so the Gate City Classic is an excellent practice event for qualified anglers. And because the KBF AOY race is tight, and many KBF anglers are jostling for position in “The Ten” at Bienville Plantation, we expect a large turnout for the combined events.

  1. Event Details

As noted above, the Classic will be held in conjunction with a KBF Trail Event.  Anglers may fish either the CKA and KBF event separately, or fish both events simultaneously. The CKA event is a 3 fish limit event and the KBF Trail event is a 5-fish limit event, but an angler’s 3 CKA fish can be cross-posted to the KBF event on Tourney X. Additionally, non-KBF members can compete in the KBF event but we encourage anglers to sign up as KBF members.  This post contains

  1. Registration
  2. Tournament Identifiers
  3. Boundaries and rules
  4. Launches
  5. Captains Meeting time and location info
  6. Tournament Start/End Times
  7. Post-Event Check-In info & KBF Trail Payouts
  8. Lake info

For additional updates, visit CKA on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/carolinakayakanglers/

Now for the event details. Because this is a multi-lake event, please read carefully. Note that anglers pay to the Get Outdoors site below, and also register on Tourneyx!

CKA Tournament 4: Kerr Scott Lake

CKA Tournament 4

Scott Kerr Lake, NC

May 12, 2018

Advance notice: please read the info below the paragraphs carefully!

Kerr Scott is another new lake to the CKA Trail. There is a story as to how it was chosen. While debating lakes for the 2018 season, the CKA directors reached a deadlock over a May date and lake. Rather than concede, one of us chose a random lake from a map, a lake he had never heard of, fished or seen in his life. One of his opponents then said, “you know, that’s a great lake. That could work out.” Therefore, all the usual factors for lake selection went out the window. We did not choose this lake based on popularity or season, angler feedback or another trail’s schedule or for any reason at all. It was random.

In sum, 3 of the first 4 lakes of the 2018 CKA season (Hyco, High Rock, and Scott Kerr) were new to our series and the 4th (Hickory) is a recent addition. We set out to shake everyone out of their comfort zone. The result we hoped for has come to pass: attendance is far outpacing 2017 and this year’s AOY standings are more competitive, making for wide open AOY and ROY races.

Scott Kerr is located in the northwest Piedmont, near Wilkesboro. It is one of 4 Piedmont lakes run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. There will be (7) launches eligible listed below. There is also camping and rental cabins, which can be found at this link.

  • Anglers will sign up through TourneyX at https://tourneyx.com/app/tourney/cka-tournament-event-4-w.kerr-scott-reservoir . You will not pay through Tourneyx. The Entry Fee for this event will be paid at the Dam Site Park morning sign in between 5:00am -5:45am. Anglers will leave after a brief Captains Meeting to reach their ramps.
  • Anglers are to remain within 30 yards of a launch area prior to the 6:15am start time. Anglers may have kayaks in the water but will not be permitted to leave early to get to fishing areas.
  • Blank identifiers will be available on TourneyX approximately one week prior to the event (we recommend printing a few extras).
  • Unique identifier CODES will be released Friday 5/11 at 8:00pm EST on the CKA social media (Facebook and Twitter). We will provide instructions at that time for how to populate the identifier.
  • TourneyX sign up will be cutoff on Friday 5/11 at 11:00pm EST.
  • Budget time for travel from your launch to check in.
  • Remember you must be present at check in no later than 2:45 pm. If you need help with or have issues uploading your fish, please make an attempt to be at the Check-In Area early.
  • ALL ANGLERS ARE REQUIRED TO SIGN IN AT THE CHECK IN SITE (DAM SITE PARK) BY 2:45PM. IF YOUR NAME IS NOT ON THE SHEET, YOU WILL LOSE YOUR FISH AND SCORE ONLY 20 POINTS TOWARDS AOY.
