CKA established the Tournament of Champions to reward the top 25 anglers in the AOY standings with an opportunity to fish for one last prize. The 2016 edition was a single day event won by Denny Romero on the Yadkin River, the 2017 event was a two day long event won by Melvin Yang. Joey Sullivan won a 2 day event in 2018, and Keith McGee won a single day event in 2019. Who will win 2020?

Lake Information & Payouts

The 2020 Tournament of Champions will be held on Kerr Lake. This is a 1 day event. There is no entry fee for this event, and no TourneyX sign up. Payouts are as follows:

1st Place for this event is guaranteed $1,000

2nd place is $500

3rd place $250

Registration and Format

Your best five fish will count to your limit. The angler with the longest 5 fish limit wins. The minimum length is 8”, as per CKA rules.

We do not use TourneyX for the Tournament of Champions. In keeping with tradition and the old school check in format of our sport, you will bring your photos to the check in at Henderson Point. There, you will fill out a scoring sheet with your totals. Directors will review the sheets and then review photos. After the winner is announced, the angler must post photos to Facebook.

ToC anglers may fish the simultaneous Battle at the Border event.

You must use a CKA identifier card. The card is posted at this link on our website, in the 6th bullet point: https://www.carolinakayakanglers.com/?page_id=25

We will release the unique code during the Captains Meeting on Facebook Live on Friday, Oct 16th at 8:30 pm.

 Boundaries and Launches

The event boundaries are as follows:

The Western boundary on the Dan River is the 360 bridge in South Boston.

The Northern boundary on the Staunton River is the 360 bridge, too.

The Eastern boundary is the Kerr dam. No fishing below the dam.

The tournament is a multi-launch event and all public launches are available to anglers.

For a list of park managed launches and NC Wildlife launches, see this link: https://www.ncparks.gov/kerr-lake-state-recreation-area/activities

Please be sure to obtain a valid N.C. fishing license. North Carolina has a license reciprocity agreement with Virginia for Kerr Lake, so you can fish the Virginia side with your N.C. license.

Please follow parking regulations practice good ramp etiquette at the lake’s public launches.

Please be sure to obtain a valid N.C. license, and follow parking regulations at the launches, as this popular lake is closely monitored by NC Wildlife officers.

CKA 2020 Tournament of Champions update

The Gate City Classic is the last points-awarding event of the season, so it is the last chance to win a spot in the Tournament of Champions. You can do that by winning the Classic or by finishing in the top 25 to earn a spot in this exclusive, entry-free event.

After 7 events, the following anglers have qualified for the Tournament of Champions:

  • Larry Moua (1st place, Shearon Harris)
  • Sammy Wilson (1st Place, Wild Waters)
  • Charles Crews (1st Place, Tuckertown, AOY & ROY)
  • James Wevers (1st Place, High Rock/Randleman)
  • Teng Vue (1st Place, Hickory)
  • Rick Rowland (1st Place, Cape Fear, Reese/Lucas)
  • 2019 AOY Will Lambert

Additionally, the 1st place winner at the Gate City Classic will also become eligible. Also, double qualifier spots will roll down in the AOY Standings list (that makes 3 roll downs so far, because Charles is triple qualified and Rick is double qualified).

Current AOY standings can be viewed at https://www.carolinakayakanglers.com/?page_id=4445

The 2020 Gate City Classic

CKA Tournament 8

The Gate City Classic

Multi-Lake Event

September 19th, 2019

The Gate City Classic celebrates the end of every CKA tournament season. Anglers compete on the final day a number of prizes, including qualifying spots in the Tournament of Champions, 2021 KBF National Championship qualification, and giveaways. Additionally, we have several announcements to make regarding the TOC, next year’s CKA plan, and other news.

Additionally, anglers who fished at least 6 events will be eligible for the On the Water Innovations custom trailer. Please register early if you fished 5 events previous to the Gate City Classic, so your name will be on the list of eligible anglers.

Finally, we are currently planning to meet for a post-event meet up in the parking lot at Get Outdoors. However, anglers will still use the check in/check out function on TourneyX for event purposes and to limit contact. We will add further details to this post as they become available.

  1. Tournament Identifier

The blank CKA identifier card will be posted 4-5 days prior to the tournament. It can be found in your TourneyX dashboard as a printable pdf file. Be sure to print spares. It can also be found on the “Tournaments” page of the CKA website.

The CKA event code will be released on CKA social media and the Captains Meeting prior to the tournament at 8:30 pm on Friday, Sept 18th, 2020.

Do NOT use the TourneyX generated code or a KBF ID card.

  1. Format and Rules

Format: 5 longest fish (8” minimum length), submitted on approved measuring device (Fish Stik, Hawg Trough or Ketch Board only), entire fish and correct ID entirely in photo.

The CKA event will largely follow KBF rules. Therefore, anglers must be familiar with and follow KBF rules as well as all North Carolina fishing laws and local regulations as they apply. Additionally, the lakes have specific rules that must be followed. CKA/KBF Rules can be found at the link below. Links to lakes are in the last section of this post.

CKA RULES PAGE: http://www.carolinakayakanglers.com/?page_id=38

Please be sure to obtain a valid N.C. license. CKA asks for proof of a valid license for anglers who win prizes.

Follow parking regulations at launches. Be respectful and follow good ramp etiquette.

Remember: All CKA Tournaments are 2021 KBF National Championship Qualifying Events, but you must be a KBF member prior to the CKA event. To become a KBF member, click here: https://www.kayakbassfishing.com/join/

The tournament standings will be unavailable for public view beginning at around 2 pm but you can still post fish until the cutoff. We strongly encourage anglers to post fish throughout the day, especially their first fish.

Note: Be sure to update your phone so that browsers and apps run well. CKA Directors and Judges cannot be expected to solve technical problems with phones. If you are using the TourneyX app, be sure to download the TourneyX Pro app to replace the older app, which is now obsolete. Be sure also that all phone settings are set to allow TourneyX access to picture data. If you use the web browser to upload to TourneyX, make sure the browser settings in your phone’s privacy features allow the site to access your location. Any and all photos submitted without GPS catch data will be denied.

Upload photos early from the water so that CKA directors can contact you if there is a question or problem with your submissions.

CKA will use the Check In/ Check Out function on TourneyX for this event. All anglers MUST Check in and Check out virtually.

  1. Boundaries and Launches

You are responsible for reading and following all CKA rules. All local lake rules also apply, so be careful to read the regulations for the lake you choose to fish. You can read CKA rules at this link: http://www.carolinakayakanglers.com/?page_id=38

Remember that certain areas of lakes are clearly marked as being off limits. This is true of some areas of Randleman Lake, for example. Anglers who fish in off-limits areas risk substantial fines. Furthermore, they will have their fish removed from the standings.

The tournament is a multi-launch event, and the listed lakes and access areas (below) will be the only eligible locations to launch. Keep in mind that some launches have limited space and different hours. Be sure to know the lake rules, arrive early, respect fellow boaters and be careful and helpful at the launches. There may also be additional launch fees. If you plan to ask for early opening of the gate, coordinate with other anglers. Any and all anglers must be allowed to enter and launch once a gate opens.

Please keep in mind that CKA does not control access to the ramps and if a gate is closed or it opens late, there is nothing we can do to change that fact.  Competition times (Lines in-Lines out) remain the same regardless of when ramps open.

We encourage anglers to coordinate early launch openings for the event, but some lakes may not be willing to provide early access, or may only do so for a fee. Anglers should cooperate and contribute in such cases, but CKA is not involved in arranging early gate/launch opening. Contact marinas/launches with your inquiries.

CKA 2020 Tournament #6 The Cape Fear River

Cape Fear – from Jordan Dam through Fayeteville, to Wilmington and out to the Atlantic Ocean, the river echoes with American history and culture. After successfully scouting the river in 2019, CKA tournament directors decided it was time for a river event. And now the time has come. “Counselor!!!!”

The Cape Fear River begins in Chatham County where the Deep River and haw River meet at Mermaid’s Point. From there, it flows to the Atlantic Ocean, passing state parks, military bases and historic towns along the way. Loaded with many different species of fishes, it receives little pressure from anglers along its northern reaches, and with old dams, countless lay downs and backwater sloughs, it provides year-round habitat for big largemouth bass.

Mid Season Update!

CKA Mid-Season Update

First, we want to begin by thanking each and every angler who has fished with us this season. It has been a wild, unpredictable and dangerous spring and we didn’t know if anglers would take the risk of heading out. So it’s with great pride that we tell you our attendance is up this season, and it’s with tremendous gratitude that we thank you.

In the second place, this is where things get real. With four events to go, anything can happen. One good or bad event can change anyone’s fortunes in the ROY and AOY races. Based on historical experience, it looks like this year’s races will again go to the wire.

A number of things are on the line. As of now, four anglers have qualified for the Tournament of Champions. They are: Larry Moua, James Wevers, Charles Crews and Sammy Wilson. The Rookie of the Year will qualify, along with at least 21 other anglers. The top 25 fish that event. Remember, however, that if you do not pay member dues, you do not keep your points. We will continue collecting those fees in person, continuing at Hickory later this month. Paying the member fee allows you to keep your AOY points, qualify for the TOC and also earn a potential at large qualification for the KBF National Championship.

Much else is at stake as we head into the second half: entries for the On The Water Innovations/Texas Two-Step Trailer giveaway, ROY and AOY prize packages, and more!

Everyone stay safe. We will see you at Hickory on June 27th!
