The 2020 Gate City Classic

CKA Tournament 8

The Gate City Classic

Multi-Lake Event

September 19th, 2019

The Gate City Classic celebrates the end of every CKA tournament season. Anglers compete on the final day a number of prizes, including qualifying spots in the Tournament of Champions, 2021 KBF National Championship qualification, and giveaways. Additionally, we have several announcements to make regarding the TOC, next year’s CKA plan, and other news.

Additionally, anglers who fished at least 6 events will be eligible for the On the Water Innovations custom trailer. Please register early if you fished 5 events previous to the Gate City Classic, so your name will be on the list of eligible anglers.

Finally, we are currently planning to meet for a post-event meet up in the parking lot at Get Outdoors. However, anglers will still use the check in/check out function on TourneyX for event purposes and to limit contact. We will add further details to this post as they become available.

  1. Tournament Identifier

The blank CKA identifier card will be posted 4-5 days prior to the tournament. It can be found in your TourneyX dashboard as a printable pdf file. Be sure to print spares. It can also be found on the “Tournaments” page of the CKA website.

The CKA event code will be released on CKA social media and the Captains Meeting prior to the tournament at 8:30 pm on Friday, Sept 18th, 2020.

Do NOT use the TourneyX generated code or a KBF ID card.

  1. Format and Rules

Format: 5 longest fish (8” minimum length), submitted on approved measuring device (Fish Stik, Hawg Trough or Ketch Board only), entire fish and correct ID entirely in photo.

The CKA event will largely follow KBF rules. Therefore, anglers must be familiar with and follow KBF rules as well as all North Carolina fishing laws and local regulations as they apply. Additionally, the lakes have specific rules that must be followed. CKA/KBF Rules can be found at the link below. Links to lakes are in the last section of this post.

CKA RULES PAGE: http://www.carolinakayakanglers.com/?page_id=38

Please be sure to obtain a valid N.C. license. CKA asks for proof of a valid license for anglers who win prizes.

Follow parking regulations at launches. Be respectful and follow good ramp etiquette.

Remember: All CKA Tournaments are 2021 KBF National Championship Qualifying Events, but you must be a KBF member prior to the CKA event. To become a KBF member, click here: https://www.kayakbassfishing.com/join/

The tournament standings will be unavailable for public view beginning at around 2 pm but you can still post fish until the cutoff. We strongly encourage anglers to post fish throughout the day, especially their first fish.

Note: Be sure to update your phone so that browsers and apps run well. CKA Directors and Judges cannot be expected to solve technical problems with phones. If you are using the TourneyX app, be sure to download the TourneyX Pro app to replace the older app, which is now obsolete. Be sure also that all phone settings are set to allow TourneyX access to picture data. If you use the web browser to upload to TourneyX, make sure the browser settings in your phone’s privacy features allow the site to access your location. Any and all photos submitted without GPS catch data will be denied.

Upload photos early from the water so that CKA directors can contact you if there is a question or problem with your submissions.

CKA will use the Check In/ Check Out function on TourneyX for this event. All anglers MUST Check in and Check out virtually.

  1. Boundaries and Launches

You are responsible for reading and following all CKA rules. All local lake rules also apply, so be careful to read the regulations for the lake you choose to fish. You can read CKA rules at this link: http://www.carolinakayakanglers.com/?page_id=38

Remember that certain areas of lakes are clearly marked as being off limits. This is true of some areas of Randleman Lake, for example. Anglers who fish in off-limits areas risk substantial fines. Furthermore, they will have their fish removed from the standings.

The tournament is a multi-launch event, and the listed lakes and access areas (below) will be the only eligible locations to launch. Keep in mind that some launches have limited space and different hours. Be sure to know the lake rules, arrive early, respect fellow boaters and be careful and helpful at the launches. There may also be additional launch fees. If you plan to ask for early opening of the gate, coordinate with other anglers. Any and all anglers must be allowed to enter and launch once a gate opens.

Please keep in mind that CKA does not control access to the ramps and if a gate is closed or it opens late, there is nothing we can do to change that fact.  Competition times (Lines in-Lines out) remain the same regardless of when ramps open.

We encourage anglers to coordinate early launch openings for the event, but some lakes may not be willing to provide early access, or may only do so for a fee. Anglers should cooperate and contribute in such cases, but CKA is not involved in arranging early gate/launch opening. Contact marinas/launches with your inquiries.

Get Outdoors returns as CKA’s Title Sponsor

Since 2013 when CKA held its first event at Lake Randleman, Shop: Get Outdoors in Greensboro, N.C. has supported us. Will Seely and his staff have repaired our kayaks, sold us gear and donated generously to our angler prizes.  The shop is our literal and spiritual home: independent, American-made and supported by paddlers and anglers throughout the region.

2020 will mark the shop’s 7th year as CKA’s most important local sponsor. The store will again host check-in for 2 events (The Burlington bash and the Gate City Classic) and once again the shop will provide special prizes for the ROY and AOY victors.

And again, CKA members who have paid dues will receive a 15% discount on their in-store purchases.

Thank you, Get Outdoors!

The 2019 CKA Season

The 2019 Season and Gate City Classic

The CKA 2019 Tournament season came full circle on September 28th when we held our final check in at Get Outdoors Paddlesports in Greensboro, North Carolina. We ended our season where it began with the Burlington Bash, when the seasonal grind began on a cold March day. Over the course of the year Will Seely and the store staff fixed our boats, offered us member discounts and hosted two tournament check-ins. Yesterday he provided the generous gift cards for the Angler of the Year and Rookie of the Year prize packages.

Over the course of the year, more than 450 anglers competed in a total of 8 CKA tournaments. There were combined events (the Yadkin Slam, the Battle on the Border), a team event as well as stand-alone events, we raised over $2,000 for Heroes on the Water and a nearly one dozen sponsor companies supported our anglers. It was a year of surprises (Tuckertown – who knew!) and a year in which 8 different anglers won 1st place at a CKA event, a sure testament to the high quality of competition on our trail.

It all culminated at the Gate City Classic with the resolution of the 2019 Angler of the Year race. In 2018, the Rookie of the Year race went to the wire, with Keith McGee the eventual victor over Graham Reay in a very close finish. The 2019 Angler of the Year race was similar in that not two but three anglers fought to the very last cast. It was ultimately decided by the thinnest of margins as the top 3 were divided from one another by 6 points each. A difference of 3-4 places at any of their top 6 events would have made this a different outcome. In the end, Will Lambert won the AOY prize, and long-time CKA veteran Joey Sullivan finished second.

Additionally, Sammy Wilson won the 2019 Rookie of the Year title and also finished 3rd in the AOY race. All three anglers had a remarkable run, and we congratulate them all. Trophy presentations will be held at our 1st event of 2020, when the previous year’s champions present the trophies to the winners, and a new title race begins!

The Gate City Classic concluded with a special prize this season. Denny Romero built a custom On the Water Innovations kayak trailer as a prize for CKA anglers who fish hard to raise money every season for Heroes on the Water. Qualifying anglers had to fish a minimum of 6 events and Denny’s daughter drew the winning number for the highly anticipated prize. Teng Yang won the trailer even though he nearly missed the drawing because he was asleep on the store couch when the tickets were distributed!

CKA wishes to thank all of the anglers who fished with us this season. We also wish to thank Kayak Bass Fishing for its support of our club.

Most of all, we owe a great debt of gratitude to our sponsors. Please click on the links and buy their great products!

Big Bass Brawl at KBF Trail (Gate City Classic)

Hi everyone,

As we gear up to compete in the Gate City Classic  this coming Saturday, we want to remind anglers who signed up for the KBF Trail of the option to compete for additional prize money. KBF runs a Big Bass Brawl at every major Trail and Open event. Here is how it works:

  • Sign up at the KBF store for the Gate City Trail Big Bass Brawl (see link below)
  • The biggest bass posted every hour wins $50 for the event (your bass can rollover from one hour to the next – it has to be knocked down by a longer fish).
  • $500 goes to the angler with the biggest bass in the tournament.
  • Up to $950 in Big bass money may be paid out over the course of the event

The cost to sign up is only $25. If you do not sign up, you are not eligible. Register at this link: https://kbfstore.com/products/kbf-big-bass-brawl?variant=7485562978340

Remember that you can also sign up for the CKA event (3 fish format) that runs parallel to the Trail!
