Tournament of Champions Recap

CKA Tournament 9

Tournament of Champions

Lake Norman

October 21-22, 2017

The Tournament of Champions marks the end of the CKA tournament season. CKA established the Tournament of Champions to reward the top 25 anglers in the AOY standings with an opportunity to fish for one last prize – a winner take all event. The 2016 edition was a single day event won by Denny Romero on the Yadkin River. Similar to last year’s attendance of 19 anglers, the 2017 edition drew 18 of the top 25 anglers (a few roll down spots were included). Unlike the first edition of the Tournament of Champions, this was a 2 day event, with a 3/2, 5 fish aggregate limit. The top prize remained unchanged – the winner took home the entire entry purse.

Day 1 of the 2017 CKA Tournament of Champions concluded with Melvin Yang leading the tournament with a three fish limit of 51.25” and Tommy Xiong just trailing the leader with 48”. Day one results are available at this link:

Day 2 of the CKA Tournament of Champions brought the remainder of the top 25 CKA anglers out for one last day to determine a champion on Lake Norman. On the final day, Melvin Yang extended his day 1 lead and anchored it with a great 19.25″ Spotted Bass. Melvin landed a 5 fish limit of 87″. For all who have fished Lake Norman, you know how impressive that is. Melvin won $900. Congratulations, Melvin Yang, for the hard fought win!

Tournament of Champions

October 21-22, 2017

Lake Norman

The Tournament of Champions pits the top 25 anglers in the CKA final regular season standings against each other to determine a winner in this final tournament round of the season. Last year’s championship tournament crowned Denny Romero the winner, and like that event, this is a winner-take-all event: the 1st place finisher will win the entire prize purse. Yes, 2nd and 3rd place will also win prizes, but there is only one cash purse to win and it is the total sum of all entry fees minus the big bass pot. This year’s Tournament of Champions will take place on Lake Norman, and so the 2017 CKA season will come full circle to end where it began.

About the lake:

For those who did not fish the February CKA event, Lake Norman is fed from the north by the Catawba River, and its 520 miles of shoreline with average depths of 33 ft. and clear water will present a dynamic challenge for anglers. The upper end (where we will launch) has many structural features such as boat docks, submerged brushpiles, rock piles and long points that invite many different styles of fishing. Since this is a fall event, bass will be following different feeding patterns than those we encountered at our late winter event. In short – whether you fish for schooling bass chasing shad or bass gravitating to structure, the entire lake will present diverse fishing options.

Notes about the format:

  • This is a two day tournament. The first day begins on Saturday, October 21st; the event ends on Sunday, October 22nd. If you do not live close to the lake, you may wish to find local camping or hotel accommodations.
  • The event is a 3/2 format. The aggregate of your 3 longest fish from Saturday and your two longest fish from Sunday will determine your total score.

CKA 2017 Tournament Photo Gallery

We have posted a gallery set from the 1st CKA tournament at Lake Norman. We will periodically update the 2017 galleries as we receive photo submissions, but in the meantime browse the gallery for post-tournament photographs from last Saturday.

We have not posted photos of fish submissions. Unfortunately, the TourneyX site is currently down for maintenance as the company prepares to launch its new web design. Your catches will once again available on that site when the new Tourneyx site launches in the coming days.

Later this afternoon we will also publish the first of 2 informational posts regarding the Falls Lake event. Stay tuned!

CKA 2017 Tournament Event 1: Lake Norman

Let the season begin!!!!!

Happy New Year to all of the CKA anglers. Excitement is building as we usher in 2017 and the 4th season of the Carolina Kayak Anglers tournament trail. We proudly announce our first event of this 2017 season and we welcome all anglers to join us on what is sometimes referred to the “inland sea” of North Carolina, Lake Norman.

Lake Norman is fed from the north by the Catawba River, its 520 miles of shoreline with average depths of 33 ft. and sometimes super clear water will present a dynamic challenge for  anglers. The upper end (where we will launch) is loaded with boat docks, submerged brushpiles, rock piles and long points which will provide opportunities for many different styles of fishing. Lake Norman was recently in the spotlight for an FLW Invitational where NC native Bryan Thrift’s run and gun junk fishing style had him hitting all of the pre-mentioned structure leading to a victory.

We will perform morning sign up, launch and afternoon check-in from the Stumpy Creek Boat Landing Area. There will be a brief Captains Meeting after which we will launch at safe light (shortly after 7 am) and return at 3:00pm for the “weigh in”. All anglers must be onshore and checked in at 3:00pm. All penalties as per our rules will be applied thereafter.

Please spread the word and share this link with fellow kayak anglers. The tournament season begins on February 18th, the AOY race begins on February 18th, and a new year of CKA fishing is upon us!
