The 2019 Gate City Classic

CKA Tournament 8

The Gate City Classic

Multi-Lake Event

September 28th, 2019

The Gate City Classic celebrates the end of every CKA tournament season. In nearly every previous year, the Angler of the Year was a lock. This year is different, as a handful of anglers will compete on the final day for the AOY title. The rest of us will compete for prizes, qualifying spots in the Tournament of Champions and for KBF National Championship qualification. It’s going to be a dramatic end to a great regular season, to say the least!

In addition, we will be giving away a number of special prizes this year.

  • Anglers who fished at least 6 of events will be eligible for the On the Water Innovations custom trailer. Please register early if you fished 5 events previous to this one, so your name will be on the list of eligible anglers
  • Rookie of the Year and Angler of the Year will receive Get Outdoors gift cards, among other prizes
  • Boonedox has donated a special prize package for the Rookie of the Year
  • TourneyX has donated giveaway items to CKA
  • Torqeedo gift certificates
  • Zee Bait Co. prize packages
  • And more!

We will also announce the time and location for the Tournament of Champions. The lake is announced after the Classic and Final standings are announced.

Now for the event details. Because this is a multi-lake event, please read carefully.

 A. Registration & Fees

Entry fee for the Classic is $55 and this will include food, your donation to HOW and your entry for big bass. We will pay through Paypal, so a fee will be deducted. All remaining entries are paid out to anglers. Registration is a two step process:

First, register on TourneyX. There is a $5 fee for sign up: https://tourneyx.com/app/tourney/cka-2019-event-8-gate-city-classic

Second, pay your $55 tournament registration fee at Shop Get Outdoors, here: https://shopgetoutdoors.com/products/cka-gate-city-classic-kayak-fishing-tournament?variant=12870399688787

If you have never fished a CKA event, you will need to create a Tourney X angler account for event registration.

B. Tournament ID card

The CKA ID card will be posted at mid-week on the week of the tournament. You will see it in your Tourneyx dashboard. Print spare copies  or reuse previous cards. The ID code will be posted to the CKA Facebook page on Friday night before the tournament (it will also appear on our Twitter and Instagram pages). Please write the ID posted on your ID card. The number and entire card must be visible in the photo and we must be able to read the ID number in order for the fish you submit to Tourneyx to be valid.

C. Boundaries and Rules

You are responsible for reading and following all CKA rules. All local lake rules also apply, so be careful to read the regulations for the lake you choose to fish. You can read CKA rules at this link: http://www.carolinakayakanglers.com/?page_id=38

Remember that certain areas of lakes are clearly marked as being off limits. This is true of some areas of Randleman Lake, for example. Anglers who fish in off-limits areas risk substantial fines. Furthermore, they will have their fish removed from the standings.

D. Launches

The tournament is a multi-launch event, and the listed lakes and access areas (below) will be the only eligible locations to launch. Keep in mind that some launches have limited space and different hours. Be sure to know the lake rules, arrive early, respect fellow boaters and be careful and helpful at the launches. There may also be additional launch fees. If you plan to ask for early opening of the gate, coordinate with other anglers. Any and all anglers must be allowed to enter and launch once a gate opens.

Please keep in mind that CKA does not control access to the ramps and if a gate is closed or it opens late, there is nothing we can do to change that fact.  Late opening will not affect check-in time at the end of the day, and all anglers must be present at Get Outdoors for check in before the 4 pm deadline.

We encourage anglers to coordinate early launch openings for the event, but some lakes may not be willing to provide early access, or may only do so for a fee. Anglers should cooperate and contribute in such cases, but CKA is not involved in arranging early gate/launch opening. Contact marinas/launches with your inquiries.

E. Captains Meetings

There will not be a live Captains Meeting for the event. CKA tournament directors may be present at certain ramps on the morning of the event, and will check CKA messages throughout the day. It is best to ask questions in the days prior to the event.

F. Tournament Launch/Start/End Times

Lines In: You may paddle to your spots but you cannot start fishing before 7:00 a.m.

G. Tournament Check-In

We will meet at Get Outdoors. All anglers must be checked in by 4 pm. This means that you must present yourself at the check in desk by that time, without exception. The check in area will be near the front store register.

Anglers must be present at the post-tournament check-in in order to collect prizes. If you leave the event early and will not attend the check-in, we ask that you send us a message so we know you are safe.

Anglers must sign the check in sheet for each event in which they compete. Anglers must be in line at Get Outdoors to sign in by 4 pm. No exceptions!

Jordan Lake Tournament

CKA Tournament 2

B Everett Jordan Lake, NC

April 13th, 2019

 Overview

Welcome anglers to Event #2 of the 2019 CKA tournament season. The tournament will be held on Jordan Lake, a lake that has been fishing well in recent years, giving up several bass in the 10-12 class. The lake is very healthy of late and lightly pressured due to recent ramp closures, and, well we all saw what the MLF pros did when they fished it. In short, this event is setting up perfectly!

We will use a multi-launch format on Jordan Lake. See the list of allowed ramps at the bottom of the post. Keep in mind that launch or day-use fees apply at some areas and anglers are responsible for launch fees. We are also using an off-lake site for the Captains Meeting (more details below). This is to avoid ramp congestion.

As always, print your ID early, and fill in the code when it is released Friday night before the event. You can also re-use your ID card from the last event – just be sure to put the code in the right box!

Sign up is free on Tourneyx – we pay the site fee after the event. If you sign up and can’t make the event, please remove your name from the tournament or contact the site to have them do it for you.

Sign up (free) on Tourneyx: https://tourneyx.com/app/category/nc—carolina-kayak-anglers/

Fee: Anglers will pay 50$ (cash only, bring exact change) for the event on Saturday morning at the Captains Meeting between 5:00 and 5:45 am.

Captains Meeting: 580 Craft Beer will host us for both the Captains Meeting and post-event check in: The address is: 354 East St, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Lines in: 6:45 am

Lines out & Photo Cut-Off: 2:30 pm

Check in: See above address. Anglers must be present and signed in by 3:45 pm.

Setting up your TourneyX Account and Photo Submissions

Summary

CKA will continue to use Tourney X to judge tournament photographs for the 2019 season.  This is a great website and very easy to use because the designers consult with kayak anglers year round.

If you are a new angler, practice using the site, and even if you are a veteran angler, please familiarize yourself with the new features. Please review the information below. If there are still questions, ask CKA staff (or join the TourneyX group on Facebook), and remember to select CKA as the club you represent (you can find the list under “Clubs” in the main menu)

What is it?

TourneyX is a website and app (the app is free) for live check in of fish caught in Catch-Photo-Release (CPR) tournaments. You can download the app or save the home page to your phone for easy access. Anglers catch a fish, take a photo of it on their board (with ID) and upload it to the site for live scoring.

What does it cost and what are the benefits?

The basic account is free but there is also a verified account option with more features if anglers choose to buy it (we do not require it). Additionally, Tourneyx charges every series a fee per angler. That fee is included in your tournament registration and we pay it after the event. We minimize cost by using a trained judge as opposed to paying Tourneyx to judge your fish. The site allows for the following:

  • All anglers can see submitted photographs
  • The site automatically culls smaller fish without making anglers sort through photos later in the day
  • Upload fish to multiple tournaments
  • A tournament record for each CKA event
  • Faster payouts when accounts are linked to your Paypal
  • The basic Tourneyx account is free; verified account allows you to use other features
  • Friends or family can follow events on-line in real-time
  • Expedited results at the end of the day

In addition, a TourneyX account allows anglers

  • Access to other kayak fishing events from around the country.
  • The site allows anglers to “map” their catches, creating a useful record of where fish were caught, that only the angler can see.

How do I set up an account?

Register for an angler account at this link: https://tourneyx.com/register/

The TourneyX tutorial video is also useful. You can view it here: http://tourneyx.com/video_tutorial/

Can I fish in events if I do not use a smart phone?

Yes. But an angler who uses a digital camera must still have a TourneyX account as the judges will manually upload photographs (see more on this point in the summary below) from your SD card. If you do not have an SD card, we will be unable to upload your fish and they will not be scored. Texted photos will not be scored either because the text message may change the geo-location data and time stamp on the image. Note however that it is possible to synch some digital cameras with smart phones via Bluetooth, so you can photograph the fish with your camera and upload it from your phone without exposing your phone to water or other accidents. We strongly recommend that Anglers create an account and use their phone but there are other options as listed above. Anglers who use a digital camera/SD card camera must be present at check in at least 30 minutes prior to the end of the vent so a judge can review and manually transfer/upload photos.

Can I still fish in an event if I do not have a TourneyX account?

No. If you do not have an account, your fish will not be scored. There are no exceptions: every angler must create an account.

Final Points

We encourage all anglers to practice and learn the proper landing techniques so as to minimize injury to the fish (or angler). Equally as important, anglers must submit a clear photograph with the fish correctly displayed to the tournament judges in order to receive points for the catch.

TourneyX is an excellent photo upload site, and as you will see it makes the tournament experience more transparent and exciting. Please let us know if you have any questions.
